New Years Day

On New Years Day Terri and I slept in late (after actually staying up past midnight!). Then, we had been invited to a lunch/party at the Flemings. Debra Fleming runs the Fleming Hotel and Restaurant, and is the very first person we met when coming to Tinian. She picked us up at the ferry, took us to her hotel, and then made us mango pancakes (made from fresh mangos she picked from the tree in front of the hotel).

The Fleming home is one of the largest on Tinian, and is a beautiful estate.

There was a large group of family and friends gathered together to celebrate not only the New Year, but an important birthday!

Here is the 'birthday boy' with Terri. Mr. Fleming was celebrating his 87th birthday... well ahead of my own father, who will be 81 this year!

After leaving the party, Terri and I went for a swim at Taga beach. You can see Goat Island from Taga beach. The water was a little rough today, as the trade winds have been frequent lately.

The beach itself was calm, and the water, though a little colder, was still warm enough for a long soak! We usually 'swim' for about 45 minutes-- it's not really swimming, it's more like floating...

Terri heads into the water ahead of me. As you can see, there are little or no waves

The water is calm, and the beach totally deserted (although a couple of families were having a picnic above the beach where the tables are). We are continually amazed at how few people use the beaches here! Even though the Casino was full of people celebrating the New Year, no one was on the beaches the next day...

That night we went to the Dynasty for pizza (I was too lazy to cook). The main entry still inspires with its decorations.

Down one of the 'arms' of the casino are stores and restaurants.

And towards the end is our destination: Monster Pizza. It is marvelous that on a small island in the pacific ocean, one can actually find great pizza! Will wonders never cease!
