Tinian village west

Going West

Today I completed my short western tour around the village. After climbing the hill, I turned west along a road that followed the ridge to the sea. On that side of the Island one will find: the city dump, the city power station and smoke stack, a Korean War Memorial, and as you come back into town, the schools: elementary, high school, and the college extension. The round trip ends with a trip to the city cemetery before finally entering the center of town.

It was a beautiful day for a walk—warm and sunny, with a slight breeze to cool one’s brow and an occasional cloud to hide the sun. The city dump and power station are well hidden from view…although the long open point you see in the pictures is where the new casino and golf course is supposed to go. So tourists will drive right past both the dump and the power station. I am assuming they will move the dump to another location, but there is nothing they can do about the power station.

Looking north once on the western side of the island, I can see the road travels north quite a distance. According to the maps of the island, the road follows the western edge of the island to the airport and to ‘Turtle Cove’, a small area where sea turtles are supposed to inhabit (Terri and I plan to visit this site soon). There are also other, smaller beaches along this road to the back-side of the airport.

It was a good day all around; although I am much more tired from the walk (I am guessing it was about 4 miles). After climbing the hill, though, the walk is easy and mostly flat.

Finally getting a scooter has been a real help for Terri. Although we both like to walk—and prefer to walk—when Terri gets called into the hospital at night it is so much better for her to be able to ride there and back. Also, if she needs to be at the hospital quickly, she has that option now. We are still looking for another scooter so that we can both begin to tour the island together, but considering it took us two months to get the first scooter, it may be another two months before we find another one.
