Lazy days on Tinian

Beach Day

After two weeks of on-call, Terri has a couple of days off. Fortunately, one of those days, Saturday, was a pretty good day—it only rained once or twice!

Terri and I slept-in late, after a call-free night, and watched as the sun came in and out of the clouds, wondering if we would be able to go to the beach. Terri (in spite of not being on call), received a call from a patient who was preparing for surgery, and Terri had to run in to the Hospital for a while to do paperwork for this patient. I rode to the store on our new scooter and got a paper.

After eating lunch and watching a movie (we have been using Netflix to great effect here on Tinian), the sun came out and we felt we had a chance for the beach. We walked to the beach with our snorkel gear and had a wonderful time. The sun stayed out, the water was warm—very little waves—and our snorkel gear worked perfectly. We were out in the water paddling around for about an hour or so.

Who knew there was so much going on under us when we are swimming in the ocean? There were many, many more fish than we had supposed. The bright yellow fish seemed to follow us around as we swam, and several times large groups of fish would swarm around us. We saw one large grouper and a large needle-nose that was quite startling.

After snorkeling, we laid on the sandy beach for a while, marveling that we were actually living here! Then we walked home. We decided to walk back down to the Dynasty Casino to get some pizza, so we took the long way—along the beach. Everyone talks about taking ‘long walks on the beach’…but we actually do it! The pizza was wonderful. It is hard to believe we can get this good of pizza in such an out-of-the-way place! We got a small—and still had to take home half of it for lunch the next day.

As we walked home that night, the rain returned. First a little sprinkle, then a real storm! Even though we both had umbrellas, by the time we got home we were both completely soaked—but happy. We put on dry clothes and snuggled-up to watch another movie.

And so it goes on Tinian for the Clawson’s. We work hard, but there are plenty of things that bring us joy on this tiny island. Tomorrow we will hold church services in our small apartment, and be able to thank our God for the blessings we enjoy!
