More flora and lawn mowers

I continue to be amazed at the variety of plants and flowers around the island. The trees are beautiful and many are very large. One of the problems on the island are the aggressive vines that grow here. Many times the vines will completely encompass other plants, and even trees.

On a previous post I had mentioned the strange custom on Tinian of not using lawn mowers, but instead using 'bush wackers' to cut all the grass. Well, I was wrong! They do have lawn mowers on Tinian, they just call they by another name: on Tinian, lawn mowers are called...goats.

They use goats here to mow their lawns. The tie the goat to a cinder block--just large enough to prevent the goat from running away, and just small enough that it can drag the block around to get to longer grass. We discovered this 'lawn mower' right next to the apartment we live in. He is out working every morning, with a smile on his face!
