Marpo Heights construction

One of the results of the economic downturns in the CNMI is that people are moving away from the islands. Perhaps the most worrisome aspect of people leaving the islands is: what will happen when the casinos are finally built? Who will build them and work in them?

One more sits empty as another family leaves Tinian...

Meanwhile, the roadwork on Main street continues. The are now just in front of the Post Office.

Looking east from the Post Office: the dark area is the newly dug-out portion of the road, the lighter area in the background is the portion with new roadbase.

All of the new bushes and trees along Broadway are doing well...

And many are already flowering!

Joe has a tough job! He has a new piece of property that he wants to put cattle on... so he is removing a wire fence from one property to install it on the new property. With the was the jungle grows over the fences here, it is a tough job. Joe told me that the posts used to build fences here are usually made of old telephone poles or concrete, as the termites will eat any type of regular wood.

While some are moving away, others continue to build. Here are just a few of the new buildings in process on Marpo Heights

I taught on the island of Tinian for 2 years (1998-2000) and loved my time there, so I have really enjoyed following your experiences online. I taught special education at the elementary school and so am especially interested in what is going on there...

I will see what I can do about broadening my scope-- I have been in construction all my life, so, naturally, my interest lies in the construction going on.

I have really been looking forward to the new casinos being built, and to see the construction styles they use, but that seems to be on hold for now...

Anyway, thanks for the note!
