Our friend Ramon, one of the coaches, talked me into going to the second game, between Tinian and the Hyatt hotel. Wow! Both teams were very good, and I saw many acrobatic moves that rivaled any great college team.
The Hyatt team was ahead by a few at half-time, then pulled ahead by about 20 in the third quarter. To everyones amazement and delight, Tinian came back, and with less than two minutes left in the game had pulled ahead! It was an exciting finish, with both teams scoring over 100... but Hyatt pulled ahead in the end due to their free-throw shooting.
Last night's game was even more spectacular. Tinian played the Aqua Resort, the only undefeated team in the league (Tinian is in yellow, the Aqua Resort team in red).
At half-time the Aqua Resort team was up by about two, and the game remained close most of the way.
In the third quarter, the Aqua team hit a cold streak, and Tinian went up by about 10, but at the start of the fourth quarter, Tinian went cold, and Aqua came right back. Then it was back and forth till the end of the game.
With just a few seconds left Aqua had the ball, and made a basket that put them up by one point. Somehow they got the ball back, and on as Tinian got the rebound, Aqua made a mistake, and fouled. With two seconds left, Tinian had two shots, and could win the game. He made the first shot (and the crowd went wild), but missed the second shot--which took the game into overtime!
During the overtime period, Aqua immediately took the lead, and Tinian spent the rest of the period fighting to get back. With a minute left, the teams were tied. But then, Tinian made a mistake, and committed an intentional foul. This gave them two foul shots, and the ball back!
The foul shooter made one and missed the other, then got the ball. They missed the basket and Tinian took the ball down and made a basket--making them ahead by one point. With just a few seconds left, Aqua took the ball down and took several shots, getting the rebound each time. The final buzzer went off just before their final shot, that went in. It took me a minute to realize that Tinian had won! The action had been so intense, and the final shot so close, it was hard to tell who had won. But the buzzer had sounded well before the final shot was taken, so even though it went in, Tinian had won! Wow, what a game!
