The death of Julian Manglona

The fourth death that has occured with a family on Tinian was in Ben Manglona's family. Ben is one of the first local Terri and I got to know, and we live in an apartment he owns. His son, serving in the military, suddenly died a few days ago. The following is a story about Ben's son that ran in the local paper:

Tinian soldier dies while training
Sgt. Manglona among Army's 'best and brightest'
By Stefan Sebastian

Sgt. Julian Manglona was on one of the final legs of his Army training Thursday before his scheduled deployment on a year-long tour of duty in Kuwait-a 6-mile run on the grounds of Fort Hood, Texas-when he suddenly collapsed.

Manglona, 39, later died at a nearby hospital.

As military officials investigate the cause of his death, Manglona's friends and family on Saipan and Tinian are mourning his passing. On Monday, family members said they are now planning his funeral services but were not immediately available for comment.

Daily rosary will be held for Manglona at the San Vicente Church on Saipan after the 6pm Mass. On Tinian, a rosary will be held daily at his parents' house, at 7pm. Funeral arrangements will be announced at a later date.

According to news reports, Manglona had served in a reserve unit assigned to the 29th Infantry Brigade Combat Team and was called to active duty in July.

In a letter, Command Sgt. Major Glenn Gomes said Manglona was a talented soldier and “one of our best and brightest leaders.”

“He always placed the mission first,” Gomes wrote. “He never accepted defeat. He never quit. And he would never leave a fallen comrade. .He will be sorely missed by his soldiers, his fellow NCOs, his company, and this entire command.”

On Saipan, Manglona had served his community as a local police officer. His tour in Kuwait would have been the second deployment to Middle East of his military career.

As with all of those who have recently lost loved ones, we offer our love and prayers to Ben and his extended family during this time of mourning.

We would like people to know how Jul has impacted our lives. He was my husband's OIC (Officer in Charge), mentor, and close friend. He always encouraged and praised Chris for all the good things he did when no one did. Jul was a big part of our family. We are still in complete shock, it really hurts to lose a friend. Coming to grips with this is going to be very difficult. Jul never showed vulnerability, he was so strong and active. We will always remember his smile, positivity, humility, and will always cherish the memories that we shared with him. To Uncle Ben, Auntie Rit, Brenda, and the girls: Please know that we are so sorry and that we share with you all the loss of this great man. And to Jul "SARGE": Thank you so much for being that rock and that push in our shove, without you we wouldn't be in the place we are today. We love you and we will miss you so very much. Till we meet again!

In Memorias:
You always shown us the way and always had compassion as a leader and helped those who needed a guide to show what were their hidden potential. You have given inspiration to face adversity, and demostrated the heart and soul to always go the distance, no matter what. I will miss those times. Thanks also for showing what, if for only a moment you have touched someone's life, it will always stay with them...always. For the original squad, we will always go on, and never quit like you have shown us.
