Tinian Elementary School Science Fair

Keshaun Nabors and Project #4 Shuttle 99

Zachariah Hofschneider and Project #12 Sound

Gizelle Kwan and Project #14 Did you hear that?

Rebecca Untalan and Project #15 Expand or Contract

Amanda Cole and Project #9 Wind Power

Mikeala San Nicolas and Project #17 Heat Expansion

The following are all the science fair projects that were presented, in no particular order:

Terri was invited to be a judge for the Tinian Elementary School Science Fair. She is a good pick for a judge as she won the State Science Fair in Ohio as a young girl. Yesterday she and two others judged the projects for content and presentation (without the kids being present). Then today she and the other judges were brought in to interview the kids who had the top six projects. They each took turns standing in front of their project, and then had to explain what they did and answer questions from the judges--very intimidating! But they all did well.

I was there to take pictures. The first picture is of all the children and their teacher, Jenifer San Nicolas. Then I have pictures of each of the top six children and their projects as they stood before the judges. Finally, I took pictures of all the science fair projects for your review.
The order of project presentation for the top six was:

1. Keshaun Nabors Project #4 Shuttle 99
Discussed how rockets are controlled by using balloons.

2. Zachariah Hofschneider Project #12 Sound
Discussed how sound moves through the air by using a bottle and a candle.

3. Gizelle Kwan Project #14 Did You Hear That?
Discussed sound vibrations by using sand on a can and light in a mirror attached to a drum.

4. Rebecca Untalan Project #15 Expand or Contract
Discussed how gas or hot air expands by using a bottle and a straw filled with powder.

5. Amanda Cole Project #9 Wind Power
Discussed the viability of wind power in the CNMI by tracking wind power and consistency.
6. Mikeala San Nicolas Project #17 Heat Expansion
Discussed how metal expands when heated by using an aluminum rod and candles.

The two top projects will be sent to Saipan to participate in the CNMI Science Fair. The top three will be awarded certificates and prizes.
